There’s been lots of speculation since the ending of Spectre as to exactly who will attempt to fill Daniel Craig’s shoes as the next James Bond. Is anybody capable of doing the job? There’s been a few names thrown around; Tom Hiddleston, Aidan Turner and James Norton all possible contenders. Perhaps they should base their decision on which one looks best in a Tom Ford suit? After all, the designer is surely going to return in his role as dedicated, highly experienced tailor?
James Bong: suave, stylish and immaculately dressed. Take Spectre, the latest bond film. The chiselled Daniel Craig steals our full attention in the opening scene. Despite the bright, flamboyant colours that are featured in the Mexican parade Craig remains the best dressed in a well-fitted navy blue Tom Ford O’Connor suit. An English Gentleman abroad.
Ever since Designer and Film Director Tom Ford took responsibility for styling one of the world’s most iconic movie characters in the 2008 film Quantum of Solace, James Bond seems to have increased his fashion stakes. Working closely with French Costume Designer Jany Temine, Ford has successfully provided a wardrobe that any secret agent would be proud to wear.
Let’s take a look at some of the best items featured in the most recent (and Craig’s last) James Bond film Spectre.
007 has always modelled a decent pair of shades and spectre was no different. The ever enigmatic Daniel Craig is featured wearing a pair of sleek looking Tom Fords to complete his look. Wearing the Snowden soft square model, this particular design is akin to the classic Wayfarer shape. With greyscale lenses and a strong black frame this Tom Ford Sunglasses model priced at £185.60 certainly helps Bond to keep his cool in the action packed scenes.
As the chief tailor it comes as no surprise that most of Daniel Craig’s suits were designed by Tom Ford, but there are some notable items that merit a mention. Firstly Bond’s tuxedo. Worn and visible in the official Spectre posters and also as Bond arrives for dinner on a train to Morocco, the tuxedo jacket is made from a luxurious silk-blend. Confidently fitted with padded shoulders the faille peak lapels also gives Craig a ‘sharp’ appearance. For the ordinary man to achieve this look it will cost around £2500 for the jacket alone, although Harrods are currently out of stock.
When meets M after his public altercation in Mexico, attention turned to his herringbone overcoat. Tom Ford designed the timeless coat using fine silk and cashmere which was then subtly woven into a herringbone pattern. Notched lapels and a chest pocket also add detail.
So Tom Ford Sunglasses, suits, jackets and shirts were all heavily featured. But Ford did give other designers a fleeting moment in the 007 catwalk.
Of course, James Bond cannot be expected to drive a car with complete recklessness and speed without a pair of black deerskin gloves. In Tom Ford’s mind Bond cannot disregard accessories when he wears some of the finest suits. Offering some warmth in the depths of the Alps and maximum gun slippage, Daniel Craig wore Mulberry’s black leather day gloves. Priced at £225, the cashmere lined accessory certainly adds detail.
For most Bond fanatics, the protagonist doesn’t come across as being heavily concerned with precise time keeping. In fact, we like to think that he shows up just in the nick of time without even trying. However throughout the film Daniel Craig is seen wearing not one, but two models of Omega’s designer watches. An Omega Aqua Terra Limited Edition, worth $6150 is featured as well as an Omega Seamaster 300 Spectre Limited Edition. It is unlikely that James Bond would live his life in accordance to his watch- but it does make a rather flash fashion addition.
It takes a real designer to pull off true elegance, style and luxury. Tom Ford isn’t just a designer of sunglasses and one off suits. He has a true eye for fashion, a keen eye for detail and love of classical items. Whoever the next James Bond may be and whenever the next film makes a return to the big screen, if Tom Ford continues to cultivate the Bond image then 007 will continue to be the best dress 00 agent the world has ever seen.
